Seven-year-old
Lily Lustig, a city youngster with a discerning palate, lets us in on her perfect day.
9:00 Mommy and Yed (that’s what I call my daddy) usually go to the gym, but it’s my perfect day so they can’t go. I am going to
Olga’s Cup & Saucer (103 Point Street, Providence, 831-6666) for breakfast. We sit outside, and I drink icy water with just a few ice cubes. I have a hunk of sourdough bread (not toasted) and give the crust to Yed. I wish I had a dog and then she could eat the crust!
10:30 My mom reads to me from the fifth
Harry Potter. We’re right in the middle of a chapter. The last book was freaky, as in horrifying. But good.
11:00 Mommy takes me to
Simple Pleasures (6 Richmond Square, Providence, 331-4120, simplepleasuresprovidence.com) so I can get a squooshy ball with

glitter in it. I have the pink one, but I’m going to get the silver one, too. Maybe I can get a chocolate truffle also. It might melt, so I should eat it quickly.
11:30 We drive to
Middle Beach in Portsmouth with my cousins. I get buried in the sand with my head sticking out. The tide comes in and I’m free. Then we chase my big cousin—he’s twelve—and I find a starfish with four arms and one nub. It got attacked. We get snacks at the snack bar for lunch: ice cream, candy and chips.
4:00 We all go to watch polo at
Glen Farm (Route 138, Portsmouth, 847-7090, glenfarm.com). We run onto the field at intermission and put the grass back in the ground. Then we chase my cousin again.
7:00 I bring my big stuffed crab to dinner at
Persimmon (31 State Street, Bristol, 254-7474, persimmonbristol. com). They’re nice, and they make boar. That’s a pig. I like the crab with fruit sauce, too, so the chef puts my big stuffed one in a pot and pretends to cook it. After a while, they bring out a crab dish and pretend it’s mine. (But mine is really hiding in the kitchen.)
9:00 After I fall asleep in the car, I keep my eyes closed so Yed will carry me to bed.
