Bad Joke

Though I’m sure that most of your Rhode Island Red Awards [January] are very deserving, I fail to see why William Rearick was on the list. Why is a man who attempts to uphold a fundamental principle of the founding fathers (i.e. separation of church and state) in a school system hailed as a fool instead of a hero? You owe this man an apology for suggesting that his making children (and adults) aware of American values is somehow a stupid act.

A Green Thumb

After reading the article about orchids [“Drama Queens,” January], I wanted to let you know about my husband, Jeffrey Book-binder, who has been an orchid enthusiast for many years. He built a greenhouse on our property and has more than 1,000 species of orchids. He does it as a hobby and displays them at shows around New England and has won quite a few ribbons.

Growing Concerns

I grew up in the hills of Pennsylvania and witnessed the huge return of the turkey and whitetail population. I have witnessed a similar increase in wildlife here. I mention this because this affair with the coyote [“Where the Wild Things Are,” December 2007] poses a danger to the environment. In Potter County (Pennsylvania), I saw how sportsmen and United States Fish and Wildlife worked together to improve the outdoors—something that I have not seen in Rhode Island.

My husband and I just returned home after spending Christmas week in Rhode Island visiting with our family. We used the December issue as a guide and enjoyed restaurants and Newport’s Christmas festival because of it. We love your magazine and feel very much at home when visiting. We also plan to contact the realtors listed because we are serious about acquiring a second home just to spend more time with our son and family.

Main Attraction

I was so pleased to see my China exhibition receiving prominent notice in the December issue as a can’t-miss event [“High Priority”]. It surely was that for many people. We had some 2,000 visitors to the exhibition. The galleries in Kingston remain an untapped resource for many people in our state. Thank you for “discovering” us and keeping us at the forefront for your readership.

A Real Page Turner

While it’s good to extol the magazine’s redesign, there is one other change that I think should be considered. All stories catch one’s interest, and then the reader has to flip to the back pages to finish. This has had a negative impact on this reader.
